MESSAGE FROM BARBARA
Hi
there, Goble Cousins! It's hard to believe that we are into
the third month of a new year already. The memories of our reunion
in Branson last summer are still fresh and make me smile even as I type
this. That being said...it is already time to look forward to 2010 and
our next Goble Family Reunion. We need to start right away deciding
on a location in the western United States. We want to give everyone
enough time to plan and budget for the trip. Those of you who have been
around for a while will remember that our last reunion in this area was in
Reno, Nevada. That is certainly a possibility again, but it would be nice
to find a different place for this one. One place that we are considering
is the Portland, Oregon area. The Goble Tavern is near there and
I've recently had some contact with the owners. It is undergoing
remodeling and they are very enthusiastic about having a Goble Reunion (or part
of one) there. Please send any suggestions you have for location to
me. I will check out the possibilities.
Our Goble
DNA Project is moving very slowly. Please consider participating if
you are a Goble male. If you are a Goble female, please continue to try
to sweet-talk your Goble-surnamed brothers, uncles, male cousins, etc. into
parting with a little spit for the cause. Remember that we have a fund
started to help those who might find the testing a financial hardship.
I'll make a pitch here for contributions to that fund as well.
We are
in desperate need of a newsletter editor. If you are good with computers
and publishing software and want to do something to benefit the Association,
please contact either Evelyn (GOBLENEWS@aol.com)
or me (bgvolker@theworks.com). I will take care of the printing and
mailing.
That's all
for now. I wish you all a blessed Easter and a lovely spring.

Hello
Goble cousins. I am beginning to
organize the material I have been gathering over the past 15 years into a Goble
Family History reference book.
I can’t tell you how long it’s going to take me to complete but this is
my first request for updated information to be included in the book. If there have been marriages, births and/or
deaths that you want included please send me the information so I can update
the record. A form is included in PDF. Please, fill it
out and send it to: Evelyn Goble Steen, 36 Lake Meade Dr. East Berlin, PA
17316 or send changes via email to GOBLENEWS@aol.com. Thank you!
Karson
Bruce (13) Greb[1] was born June 28, 2007
weighing 9 lbs. 14.5 ounces and measuring 20 inches long. His parents are: Kyle Bruce (12) & Addie
Tennille Greb. His big brother is 3-year-old
Kade Thomas (13) Greb. Proud
grandparents are Carl Bruce and Mary Ann (11) Goble Greb. This is a new addition to the Thomas Goble
Tree.
Regretfully we forgot to
include Floyd E. (11) Goble in our birthday acknowledgements in
our last issue. Floyd was 87 on October
13, 2007. [2]
Please don’t hesitate to
send in special birthday, anniversary, birth and marriage information for the
newsletter. Please send you special
announcements to either Evelyn Goble Steen at GobleNews@aol.com
or Barbara Goble Volker at bgvolker@theworks.com.
We have received enough
information from our South African cousins to start a Goble database for a
South African Goble Tree. Many of our
South African Goble cousins are descendants of the English line of Gobles. Richard Holmes Goble was the son of James
Methold Goble and Dorothy Mitcalfe of Sussex.
Richard Holmes Goble was born in 1819 in Brighton, England and traveled
to Australia at the age of 16 where he met his wife to be, Eliza Mary
Crook. They married and had 10 children
in Durbin, South Africa. Those children
are the basis for our South African tree.
Information will soon be available
on our webpage! For those of you who
don’t know, there are Goble locations in South Africa. So far we’ve discovered a Goble Road and the
Goble Palms. The Gobles owned a great
deal of property in and around Durbin and I’m confident we’ll find more Goble
sites there. If you have information
you would like to contribute contact Evelyn at GobleNews@aol.com.
As we think of the
possibility of having our 2010 Goble Family reunion in Portland, Oregon near
Goble, let’s become more knowledgeable about the location and it’s meaning to
the Goble family.
In 1853 Daniel Blue (8) Goble (descendent of Thomas
Goble) took up a donation land claim on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.
Daniel Goble sold his land to George Foster, who laid out a town and named it Goble.
The Goble Post Office operated between 1894 and 1960.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, General Land
Office Records, shows that Daniel B. Goble was issued a land title on October
15, 1873, for 172.4 acres for parts of T6N R2W Section 12, under the 1850
"Oregon-Donation Act". The
1856 cadastral tax survey for T6N R2W, filed at the Surveyor's Office of
Oregon, has the Gobal homestead labeled. Upstream off the Oregon shore
is Coffin Rock and downstream towards the middle of the Columbia River is Sandy
Island.
The 1888 nautical chart Columbia River, Sheet
No.4, Grim's Island to Kalama, has Sandy Island labeled as Sandy I.,
and shows it directly across from the Washington town of Kalama. Just downstream
on the Oregon side is Gobles Point. [3]
